There is a new group been formed known as the East of Scotland Paediatric Manual Handling Specialists Group after many years of planning. It has now become established and meets every 3 months to discuss common concerns and sharing of information, with the aim of reducing the ever ‘re-invention of the wheel’ scenario.

Members are from various professional backgrounds and employed by Local Authorities, NHS and Charities but everyone

is involved in manual handling in some way; i.e.

to provide better access for young people, to allow better integration and also for those who deal with service procurement and equipment provision.

They look at current legislation and are contributing to new Scottish guidelines that are in the making. They also share and aim to standardise relevant

documentation and try to improve general standards regarding manual handling issues. Importantly, the group also offer peer support to those who work in relative isolation. The East of Scotland Paediatric Manual Handling Specialists Group are hoping to expand and are keen to hear from others who feel they can benefit from and contribute to the aims of the group.

Maureen Blake has set up a ‘LinkedIn’ national group for Paediatric manual handling specialists which anyone may join as well as a Lothian one for discussion of local issues. Presently there are no active discussions, but don’t let that put you off, new groups have to start somewhere and hopefully when people get to know of their existence, they will generate a forum for help and advice as well as problem sharing/solving.

Continue.
