Last month I did a “falls” special issue. It is an area that is seeing an increased amount of interest. Some of you (over 600 actually) are connected with me via LinkedIn which is a social networking site similar to twitter and facebook, but with a great deal more professionalism about it. One of the groups I am associated with is “Elder Care Professionals”. This group has an ongoing discussion around falls prevention and management. It has quite a few interesting resources you may be interested in if

this is your area of expertise. For instance, Karen Klien from Seatlle, directed our attention to her web site which devotes an entire section to articles on fall prevention, with over 15 articles on general and specifics including what to buy for the home and what to do after you have fallen.

Tom Van Rens from Milwaukee showed us his handling vest. Most of us are familiar with handling belts but this takes it a step further. I was a bit sceptical at first and it brought a smile to my face, but after careful consideration, I thought why not? I actually would love

to give this a try. In emergency care we have a device known as the KED or TED which is similar in concept. It is designed to be able to move someone in a seated position who has a suspected spinal trauma, such as may be the case in a motor vehicle incident. Tom, if you are reading this and would like to make me your UK distributor, give me a shout (but let me try it first).

Then there was Robin Sanders of Minneapolis informing us of his remote monitoring technology that can even detect if the person is actually wearing the system.

Shannon Martin of Florida mentions that they created a Falls Prevention Coalition in her area. It's an issue she feels passionate about she explains.

All of the resources mentioned can be checked out here but if you are not already a member, why not Join Linked-In
