The Minister for Health, Michelle O’Byrne, today announced the Royal Hobart Hospital had been recognised for the excellent standard of health care it provides patients.
Ms O’Byrne said the RHH had secured full accreditation by the Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS) until 2015 and congratulated staff for the work they had put in to achieve the outstanding result.
“For the first time, the RHH has gained the highest ACHS award - an Outstanding Achievement - for its comprehensive multidisciplinary patient assessment processes,” she said.

“A key component of this is the implementation of a better system that has ensured early identification of patients who require additional care requirements, with resulting referrals to allied health professionals.”
Ms O’Byrne said the award sent a positive message to the community that the RHH was committed to excellence in the provision of safe and quality health care for patients.
“The accreditation process ensures the RHH quality and safety standards meet those of
its patient assessment processes, surpass them – placing it in a leadership position at an international level in this area.”
Ms O’Byrne said the RHH was reviewed in both the areas of clinical and corporate services.
“Surveyors also awarded the hospital 17 Extensive Achievements - compared with just two EAs at last accreditation.
“Extensive Achievements were achieved across many areas, including the hospital’s Falls Management Program incorporating initiatives which focus on aspects of patient safety such as the Red Dot Mobility Alert, and the pressure ulcer prevention and management strategy.”
Ms O’Byrne said the ACHS surveyors had complimented the RHH on its commitment to reviewing, benchmarking and evaluating across all aspects of care, resulting in a strong culture of continuous quality improvement.
“Patients going to the RHH can be assured that the hospital is already meeting a high standard of health care, while continually looking at ways to improve and strengthen future services,” she said.
