I have highlighted this journal each time that it has been published and not without good reason. I already thought it was a cut above the rest but it has managed to go one step further with this latest issue. It features what they describe as an interactive article. This article describes the use of moving and handling equipment by physio/physical therapists (PT’s) during

the rehabilitation of people.
In recognition of the fact that PT’s as well as nursing staff are at risk of musculo-skeletal disorders (MSD’s), 3 patients were selected where a stand aid was used in their rehabilitation. The article is well written in its own right, but each of the three patients have been filmed and the footage integrated with the article so that there is no ambiguity as to what is meant by the text. It shows an advantage over the printed version of the magazine as compared to the online
version.
Other articles include making the business case to initiate, evaluate and sustain a safe patient handling programme. One article discuss the problems associated with platform (divan) beds and safe patient moving and handling in a psychiatric setting. Another article describes how legislation has had a positive effect on safe patient handling in Washington state. The final article explains the advancement of moving and handling in Scandanavia.
All of these articles are of an academic nature giving cutting edge research articles into the subject of moving and handling. Incidentally, in case you are wondering why the Americans call it safe patient handling, it is because as yet, the legislation is designed for hospitals, not care homes. It is only 6 years since the HOP series of books became the “The Guide to the Handling of People” revised from “The Guide to the Handling of Patients” in the UK. Maybe one day SPH will become known as “Safe People Moving”. If so, remember you heard it here first....Royalties please.
As stated previously, this journal is a must for all who are serious about moving and handling, and for $24.95 (£16) for a full years online access, it is a bargain.
