Why am I going?
As many of you are aware, my health has not been the best over the last few years. If I don’t retire now, I may not be able to when it counts. But don’t be sad for me. If you know me, you will know that I am not one for miserable faces. At least , not if the miserable face is on my head. I am still and always will be smiling.
Will I miss it?
No. I have had a good career. Moving and handling has took me to different parts of the globe that I might not have got to in other jobs.
I have had the privilege of speaking with government ministers in attempts to change policy and legislation, I have interacted with some fantastic carers who make massive differences in other peoples lives, recently I met a group of carers who communicate, all day every day, through smell with a very happy and satisfied (thanks to their efforts) blind, deaf quadriplegic boy.
I have been given fancy titles like Professional Development Officer, National Moving & Handling Coordinator and Training & Education Specialist. I also have been given some not so fancy titles as well but I am not sure they are legal to put into print.
I have met some dynamic professional people who are too numerous to mention, but three stand out from the crowd and they are Victor Makgwana who works tirelessly and has kept me motivated in the South African Moving & Handling Project for the past 7 years. I know he is going to be saddened to read this and will be skyping me at the earliest opportunity.
Steve Kirkpatrick of SK Handling. This unassuming, humble man is truly a rare specimen. I owe him so much and will continue to pay my debt to him, don’t worry Steve. Please buy your M&H products from him.
Finally, Pat Alexander for no other reason than she was the one I was measuring myself against for the past 22 years. I think that revelation will be a shock to her when she reads this. Why do I say this? Despite her professional, academic and secular achievements, she is the most down to earth, realistic and balanced person in our field. The devotion she shows to her husband and friends while keeping business in perspective and still managing to be the most prolific author is incredible.
From my standpoint I am too busy to miss it. Those who know me well are aware that I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. It is impossible to get bored when you have a strong faith. Especially when that faith has plenty work that needs doing. Did you know for instance that the jw.org web site has more languages on it than any other web site? Over 700.
A little known fact is that I also have a HGV license. Something I acquired in the heady days of my youth. This will be getting a dusting down so you may see me trundling down the M1 or parked up on the M25 to ensure the boredom doesn’t set in.
My final public speaking role is due to take place on December 1st in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. This is free CPD event with an excellent lunch, so if you can be there, please book your place. There are only four places remaining so book NOW here.
