Moving & Handling Instructors Course
This is our flagship 5-day fully accredited instructors course. This is the minimum standard to which any instructor or key trainer should be qualified according to the 2010 guidelines for moving and handling instructors.
Approved through the Open College Network (OCN) this course has been formulated and written by myself with the Guide to the Handling of People 6th edition in mind. Indeed, many of the authors of that publication have contributed to the mini masterclasses DVD mentioned below.
Hand outs on the course are the best and most up-to-date in the industry comprising £300 worth of materials (available separately) written and produced by myself with assistance from many leading authorities in the industry including the following:-
Moving & Handling Instructors Presentation CD & Manual
Mini Masterclasses for Moving & Handling Instructors DVD
Assisting People 2006 DVD with free upgrade for the next DVD
Due to the nature of the assessments, the course is spread over 2 weeks. Usually Monday through to Wednesday in week one, followed by Monday & Tuesday in week two.
The cost of £750 + VAT (£900) is the same throughout the UK. There may be an additional charge for overseas courses depending upon location and number of delegates. An easy payment scheme is available, please ask for details.
Please complete the form to the left and I will be in touch regarding dates and venues closest to you. Corporate enquiries are also welcome.
Moving & Handling Instructors Presentation CD
A powerful programme which can be used to present the theory component of moving and handling sessions. Comprising 87 pages of interactive and dynamic content, it also links in with other external resources such as the Health & Safety Executive website to give fuller explanations of content. Sections for consideration include teaching, perception, anatomy, risk assessment, legislation, duty of care etc. Much of the content you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. For instance, there are videos of real time incidents which enable theory and practice to be linked. In the teaching section, there is a teaching tips page. Here the user can hover the mouse cursor over one of the 7 suggested speaking skills. Doing so will reveal text in three other boxes on the page. These boxes explain why the skill is important, what you need to do to achieve the skill and exercises which will help you improve in the skill. Available separately for £100 ($155) + p&p.
Moving & Handling Instructors Presentation Manual
The manual which accompanies the CD is a justification for each page on the presentation. Without the manual, much of the CD would not be appreciated. There are many hidden features which would otherwise be missed. For example hovering the mouse over the disc in the anatomy section shows the names of the component parts; i.e. the annulus and the nucleus. Clicking the left mouse button though starts an animated herniation of the disc, clicking the right mouse button will complete the animation. Available separately for £19.99 ($31) + p&p.

This unique and unprecedented 2011 production DVD comprises of 22 mini lectures from some of the most eminent and well
Assisting People 2006
This is a DVD, as the name suggests, which I originally produced in 2006. It contains many of the moves which you could be using in a care home, community or hospital setting. Intended as an aide memoir for the instructor it has been designed to assist you in the preparation of your practical training sessions. In addition to this, there are a further 17 mini lectures on this DVD mainly focusing on anatomy and physiology. Any who register this production (in the Nordic brand) can trade it in for a free upgrade when the next Assisting People DVD is produced.
Available separately for £100 ($155) + p&p. With free upgrade when the next assisting people is produced in the near future.
For more info, please fill in the form above or to purchase the items separately please contact Steve Kirkpatrick at the NCS office on 01227 479293 or e-mail him via stevek@mountway.co.uk
respected individuals who have influenced the field of moving and handling. The purpose of this production is to give you a head start on where you need to focus your research prior to the delivery of a session. For example, maybe you have been asked to carry out a session on the falling person but you haven’t done this for a while. You would then play the session by Melanie Sturman-Floyd who is the author of the chapter on Falls in the Guide to the Handling of People 6th edition. Melanie gives you a brief overview of the topic and, as with all of the other speakers, she then guides you where to go for further information. Available separately for £100 ($155) + p&p.
The list of mini-masterclasses are outlined below:-
Don’t just accept any instructor
There are many people and courses out there with similar titles to this one. However, caution is imperative. Questions you need to ask when making your enquiries are:-
Is the course accredited through an awarding body?
This is important because it ensures that a credible outside agency are monitoring standards. This course is accredited through the Open College Network (OCN).
Who is the Instructor?
Again, the person taking the course needs to have a personal history that you are satisfied with. I am not allowed to say that they MUST be a member of the National Back Exchange but if they are not, a good question to ask is, Why? For my history and recommendations, please see my About page.
What support material (handouts) do I receive on the course?
Some places will give you a few photocopied sheets of paper. See below for a detailed description of the materials Nordic Care Services offer.
