A moving and handling link worker is required for a school in Pembrokeshire. The
post is for term time only which may well suit some of you reading this. Duties include

Another duty will be to develop & reviewmanual handling risk assessments for pupils
in line with the Council’s Manual handling guidance.
Pay scale is £15,725 - £16,830 pro rata. The post is for 18.5 hours per week.
To provide support to all staff at Portfield School under the guidance of the Headteacher
and Local Authority Manual Handling Trainer/Co-ordinator in respect of all activities
associated with manual handling.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
To assist in the continuous development and implementation of School’s and Council’s
Manual Handling Policy & strategy.
To monitor & record the competency of staff in relation toall practices relating
to manual handling in the school setting; monitoring all staff in the use of slings
and hoists and in other areas of manual handling
Prepare for and provide annual refresher and/or update manual handling training

training for operational personnel to assessment/awareness training for managers
and supervisory staff
To audit working practices to observe any change following training or to highlight
areas requiring particular attention and refer as appropriate to the manual handling
unit.
To develop & reviewmanual handling risk assessments for pupils in line with the
Council’s Manual handling guidance
Maintain concise and accurate records of training & monitoringsessions in line with
current best practice.
Participate towards the safe working practices of the Council under the Council’s
Business Plan, Health and Safety Programme and prescribed legislation.
To provide risk assessment advice and guidance to the Headteacher on moving and handling,
in accordance with current best practice, e.g. Corporate Health and Safety Programme,
Manual Handling Passport Scheme and HSE guidance.
Ensure that personal knowledge of best practice and ongoing developments in manual
handling is maintained, in line with current legislation and nationally agreed standards.
Attend relevant meetings and other corporate working forums as directed.
Contribute to overall evaluation and monitoring of manual handling activities.
Undertake any other duties, commensurate with the grading of this post as requested
by the Headteacher and Manual Handling Trainer/Co-ordinator.
To support the site manager and Headteacher investigate any manual handling accidents/incidents.
Person Specification
Must have a recognised, relevant Education, Nursing, Healthcare or Social Care Qualification
– minimum NVQ level 3
Must have experience in an education / healthcare / social care setting.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must have a detailed knowledge/understanding of Manual Handling Legislation.
Must demonstrate a practical problem solving approach to moving and handling issues.
Must be a self-starter, with ability to work independently and within multi-disciplinary
teams.
Must be physically capable of demonstrating good practice.
Must promote client independence, minimal lifting, use of equipment and ergonomic
changes to minimise risks to staff.
Must have attended a course in moving and handling.
Must be willing to become a member and attend regular meetings with the Local and
National Back Exchange
Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.
Manual Handing Teaching and Advisory role experience would be desirable.
Should demonstrate efforts to keep abreast of developments in the field, by attendance
at meetings, conferences and seminars.
Should be able to demonstrate knowledge of relevant legal influences in the field,
an understanding of the ergonomic principles involved, and of the risk assessment
process required.
Must be willing to undertake further training if necessary in line with the requirements
of the post.
