There is a new publication available for all professionals associated with safe patient handling and movement. It is an excellent piece of work and I hope that the editorial team, which includes Mike Betts from Luton (& NBE chairman), are able to maintain the high standard of this first issue. It is available either as a printed publication (£140 for the UK) or online for a very reasonable $25 (£15) per year. Yes, I hear you say... But your online magazine Gavin, is free, so why should I pay for a subscription to a magazine with a similar theme to yours?

Continue.

Have a look and you will see why. Whereas my online only magazine is of general interest and points you to where you can glean some very valuable information, the American Journal of Safe Patient Handling and Movement is a much more evidence based and professional magazine. My magazine is full of subjective and anecdotal opinion (which has its place) whereas the AJSPHM is based almost exclusively on research based evidence.

If you subscribe to the online version , (which I have) you will be met by a well presented pdf file. It has page turn technology which makes it look as close to a real magazine as possible.

The first article is looking at SPH in America and encourages its readers to learn from the past. Other articles include looking at moving and handling in care homes and an analysis of “Lift Teams” which is not something that we advocate in the UK, but makes for an interesting read anyway. A further article is looking at Gait (Handling) Belts while a fifth research based article written by Mike Betts looks at the development of moving and handling in the UK.

The American Journal of Safe Patient Handling & Movement (SPHM) is the first journal of its kind in the USA (closest rival would be the NBE’s Column published in the UK for the past 17 years) dedicated to providing a forum for the latest research and evidence on the how, why, and what of safe patient handling and movement (SPHM). Its readership is representative of all the professional groups involved in this field including nursing, therapy, risk management, safety, research, consultants, and educators.

The American Journal of Safe Patient Handling & Movement is peer reviewed and will be indexed in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and other databases.

I would strongly encourage all who are serious about moving and handling to register for this magazine.
