Have you ever come across problems with support whilst using toileting slings? If someone doesn’t have the upper body strength to hold themselves, they can tend to fall through the aperture. According to some sources only 25% of people requiring to be hoisted can safely use a toileting sling anyway. But the extra transfers needed when using the Universal can have its own issues.
We have heard this problem on numerous occasions now so I decided to look at solutions to the problem. Eventually we came up with the thought of adding an 8 inch elasticated belt, fastened to the sling using Velcro meaning it is adjustable for the carer (this means one size fits all and if weight is gained the belt is adjusted as opposed to replaced). They lift the user out of a chair using the toileting sling and move the belt around the bottom to give extra support whilst transferring. This relieves some of the pressure under the arms and the legs meaning the sling has vastly improved comfort. This should bridge the gap between the convenience of a toileting sling and the comfort and support of a Universal.
I would be very grateful if you could let me know your thoughts please. All input helps us to create better slings ensuring the user has the safest and most comfortable slings possible.
In my view, toileting slings
are a success due to their name rather than their function.
Like most sling manufacturers, Horcher have heard this problem on numerous occasions so Mark Wilcock decided to look at solutions to the problem. Eventually he and his team came up with the thought of adding an 8 inch elasticated belt, fastened to the sling using Velcro meaning it is adjustable for the carer. It also means one size fits all and if weight is gained the belt is adjusted as opposed to replaced. They lift the user out of a chair using the toileting sling and move the belt around the bottom to give extra support whilst transferring.

Thus relieving some of the pressure under the arms and the legs meaning the sling has vastly improved comfort. This, according to Mark, should bridge the gap between the convenience of a toileting sling and the comfort and support of a Universal.
He would be very grateful if you could let him know your thoughts. “All input helps to create better slings ensuring the user has the safest and most comfortable slings possible” says Mark.
