When it comes to implementing a safe patient handling policy, the introduction of equipment is not enough on its own. Training helps, but again, it is not enough on its own. What is needed is a culture change.
Ask almost any worker in any other industry what is a safe limit to lift and they will generally fall into line with legal statements. In the world of care though, many think nothing of lifting 200lbs, 90Kg or 14 stones from the floor. This risky behaviour may be due largely to lack of understanding, according to a recent study by Atlas Ergonomics.
Study results are now available in a white paper titled "Safe Patient Handling Program: Addressing Knowledge and Culture to Achieve Success." Recommendations and conclusions in the report are designed to help anyone addressing safe patient handling concerns in a healthcare environment.
