A firefighter from Manchester has received £80,000 in compensation after being sacked over an e-mail which he sent to work mates. For myself, it is the issue over the contents of the e-mail rather than the e-mail itself which is a cause for concern.

Christopher Bennett who had 25 years service was concerned that the firefighters were asked to sleep in chairs rather than in beds. He mentioned in his e-mail that his back pain had been increased since using the chairs and was seeking to see if anyone else had suffered as well.
The issue surely is one of health and safety. If I need to be rescued during the night by a firefighter, I would prefer to be rescued by one who can have a proper “rest” and is fit for work. It seems crazy to
spend £400 each on 300 chairs and demand that all sleep in them when for way below that figure a decent bed could be bought for individuals who cannot use the recliners.
