The famous “Flying Doctor” service in Australia is seeking to find larger planes for their patients. People often think of Australia as fitness fanatics and sports mad, however, the world trend towards obesity has not missed out the antipodes.

As a result of this the Royal appointed service has had to put out to tender for planes with a larger payload. The current payload allows for patients up to 260Kg (almost 41 stones in old money or 573lbs if you are American). The new planes will allow for up to 140Kg (22 stones or 308lbs).

A spokeswoman for New South Wales health ministry told Reuters that this follows similar moves in other parts of the ambulance service where there has been a need to accommodate the obese.

Some of you may remember Sam Bailey the Australian quadriplegic who built himself a hoist and learned to fly an airplane and helicopter from issue 1-6 of this newsletter.
