The book Getting Started/Restarted with Safe Patient Handling & Movement has been written for those professionals who have been asked to take on the task of implementing a safe patient handling and movement program in their facility or agency or is wanting to re-ignite an existing one. It provides a template that takes the reader through all the stages of program implementation. Starting from asking the most basic questions relating to establishing the goals of the organization and the resources available for the project, there are chapters on establishing a structure upon which to build the program, developing an action plan and evaluation strategy, writing policy and procedures, marketing the program to clinical and senior staff, and training and educating staff. It also includes a detailed step by step approach to conducting a patient handling risk hazard assessment and what to look out for when purchasing and installing equipment to make sure that the right equipment for the right risk in the right quantity is purchased.

The author Heather Monaghan has been a Registered Nurse for more than 20 years and implemented her first SPHM program in 1995. Whilst originating from the UK, Heather has spent the last six and a half years in the United States. Recognized as a leading innovator in the field of SPHM she is also the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Safe Patient Handling & Movement. With experience on both sides of the Atlantic Heather feels that both countries share similar challenges when implementing programs, particularly in securing enough funding for equipment, and in getting staff to consistently use the equipment once it has been purchased.

The book is full of practical tips on how to avoid some of the more common pitfalls of SPHM program implementation and is available at www.visioninghealthcare.com on the resource page.

Another book worth considering. It is available on Amazon.com but not Amazon.co.uk which means it is not available through my shop but you can purchase it through the Visioning Healthcare website.
