Golf is one of the worlds’ most popular past times and is often suggested as a means of keeping fit by its’ proponents. The Philippine Star however suggests that there is a high injury rate among golfers.
Only 17% of injuries are caused by a single event such as being struck by a wayward golf ball or being hit by a club. 83% of all reported injuries were related to overuse from repeated swings during practice sessions. The posture required to hit a ball accurately can cause RSIs in the back, wrist and shoulders. Professional golfers who have perfected their techniques are among the highest sufferers. Looking at studies from the USA, Germany and Australia the report says that almost 16% of golfers will sustain injuries each year. Can you imagine the outcry there would be if 16% of nurses received injuries each year.
Golf fitness instructor Sean Cochran, who regularly works with PGA Tour professionals, claims that half of all golfers will incur a low back injury at some point in their careers.
