A lot of you came across my site when you opened Google, typed in moving and handling, and then searched the results. You will have noticed that the first few listed as well as the ones on the right of the screen are “paid for” entries, or bribe listings as I like to call them. In other words, pay Google some money and they will put your listing at the top, the more you pay, the higher you will get. This has nothing to do with quality or even appropriateness of the web site.
You will also notice that there are millions of sites and pages that Google has found. Today for example I typed in moving and handling and was greeted with a message saying that Google had found 6,070,000 pages in 0.28 seconds. Placing quote marks around the phrase like this “moving and handling” means that the Google will only look for pages with that exact phrase in. I have reduced it now to a mere 101,000 pages but it did take a finger tapping 0.37 seconds. Even this though, means that as Google shows 10 results per page you still have to scroll through 10,100 Google pages to check out all the results.
Regardless of if the person/company is just setting out, or has been around for many years, this doesn’t bode well for them. To be just stuck on the bottom of this heap can be a difficult mountain to climb.
For instance, Sondra Butterworth, developer of the PHACS approach to moving and handling did a lot for her cause when she spoke at the NBE conference a year or two back, but where is her web site in Google? The answer 190th. I found her right at the bottom of page 19. Not many people would scroll down this far. The reality is though, that she offers a very good service especially for those involved with mental health or learning disabilities. Another really good and successful trainer is Peter Chell, (Quest Training & development) I found him on page 28.
On the other hand, this site is not only on the first page of Google, but also ask, lycos, yahoo and every other search engine worth its salt. And what is more, I don’t pay them a penny.
Maybe you have a business with a web site that isn’t doing much for you. Or maybe you have a business without a web site. Could you do with a hand? Let me design your site for £600 for up to 20 pages. If you also let me host it and maintain it for you for just £25 per month, I will be able to get you very close to the top of the search engines within just a few months.
