The city of Boston is tackling it’s obesity problem with a vigorous campaign which it is naming “Mass in Motion”.
By asking restaurants to post information regarding calorie counts next to each item in their menus, and educating parents, it is hoping that waist sizes will start to reduce. In the 16 years from 1990 to 2007, obesity levels rose from 43% to 59%.
Other elements of the plan include:
Requiring state agencies responsible for large-scale
food purchasing to follow healthy nutrition guidelines. Those agencies include the
departments of Public Health and of Mental Health.
Making wellness grants to cities
and towns.
Expanding state-sponsored Workplace Wellness programs.
Launching a new Web
site promoting healthy eating and physical activity.
