Leptin, the drug claimed to cure obesity about 10 years ago, which failed to live up to expectations could make surprise come back.
Researchers thought they were going to win the Nobel prize when they discovered Leptin. The way it works is by suppressing appetite. Users of Leptin found that initially the drug worked. They lost interest in food and so lost weight. However, the brain is a clever thing and within a relatively short time it worked out how to override the effects of the drug and weight gain ensued.
Now though, a doctor claims to have found a way of preventing obese mice from becoming immune to Leptin by pre-treating them with drugs that are used in treating liver disease and cystic fibrosis.
