Another story which ran recently was this one. I have ran it again because they now have a virgin money giving site for the charity. Please consider donating (I have, £10) any amount you feel appropriate would go a long way to helping this worthwhile cause.

When I ran T.L.C. I had several freelance trainers who worked for the company. However, the good ones we kept as employees. One such person was a trainer named Sue Silvester.

Sue eventually left the training world to re-train as an operating department practitioner (ODP) and, as so often happens when a colleague moves on, we lost touch. She has now qualified as an ODP and is once again in the training role. She works for Spire in Washington (T&W UK not DC USA). Our paths crossed recently and so we played catch-up.

She is going to India to teach moving and handling to theatre staff.

The Shri Vithalro Joshi Charity Trust (SVJC Trust) is a UK based charity which sees medical professionals helping staff and patients in the Walawalker Hospital in Dervan village, Maharashtra State.

The India project was started by Dr Deshpande. After a visit to the Walawalkar Charity Hospital in 2006 he came back to the UK with a vision for staff in the North East Region to work in a third world country, little did he know 6 years later how the project would go from strength to strength

The first visit was arranged in February 2006 it was so successful that it continued year after year with an input throughout to collect and send much needed equipment or information.

Originally the project was to offer Orthopaedic, general, urology & opthalmic surgeries as well as radiology, Midwifery, Anaesthesia and Recovery, Intensive Therapy and Pain Service. Last year saw the introduction of teaching techniques

biomedical engineering. This year, with Sues help, they will also receive training in moving and handling in the theatres and recovery rooms.

Also there are technicians going who can repair equipment.

Sue needs to raise £500 for the SVJC Trust to be able to join in the project. This will pay for her flights, so why not make her a donation. Even a fiver would make all the difference.

I was hoping that by the time this newsletter went out the SVJC Trust would have set up a virgin money giving account similar to the one Melanie Sturman used when she ran the London Marathon, but as yet, it hasn’t happened. In total there are 20 individuals going this year. If you have any connection with India,or if you would like to make a donation to further the good work she and her team are doing, or even if you would like to see how you could join the team next year, please contact her.

Sue can be contacted directly on (01429) 820221 or 07773240937 (UK landline and cell phone no.)
