The MHRA has issued a Medical Device Alert on Locomotor slings produced by Select Healthcare. Following an incident where a patient fell from a hoist when safety critical stitching was missing, select has been requested to issue a Field Safety Notice. However, they cannot trace all slings, especially where they have been passed on to second or subsequent users.
I think it is worthy of note, that this alert does not condemn locomotor slings. Many of us have known Richard for many years and when an incident such as this happens, it is easy to damage the reputation of the company concerned.
Please note though, that the alert warns of checking the sling prior to use and every 6 months in accordance with the revised manufacturers guidelines. This is true of any sling not just restricted to Locomotor slings. There is no question regarding the general safety or suitability of the slings but it is the paperwork that accompanies the slings that have been revised. These can be downloaded from Selects web site.
I am sure this matter has been very distressing to Richard, Marcus and the others from Select, who offer a very good range of products at a very fair price. I am not reporting this in the manner that I am because I have a vested interest in Select (which I don’t any longer) but because I genuinely feel that they have a great product and that they are great blokes. Lets not forget that as we consider the Medical Device Alert and of course, condolences go to the family of the deceased.
