People who know me well know that I am a fan of REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment). Designed by Hignett and McAtamney (Loughborough University) in 2000 it not only serves us well in the healthcare industries but also, industry at large. It is a system that a line manager on an automotive plant can use to show that his/her staff are at postural risk when doing a certain tasks for example. Or perhaps a risk assessment officer is up against management, where they have one opinion and argue that his perception is just another opinion. Another use is where an individual is continuing to put themselves at risk despite being told better ways to carry out a task.

In each of these examples, it would be helpful to be able to sit the other party down and show them how REBA works, thus giving evidence to support your point.

The problem though is that REBA can take a bit of time getting to grips with. You generally wouldn’t have time to show them exactly how all the tables work, and the flicking from one sheet to the other adds to the confusion. What would be really helpful would be to have a tool that takes care of all that calculation and cross reference stuff and just presents you with the final REBA Score and action.

The said tool has now arrived. I am hopeful that this tool will bring REBA even more into focus making it accessible to anyone. All you need to make this tool work is a photo of the problem you are faced with.
