Back in 2001, the state of Vermont in the USA introduced their safe patient handling bill. This came into force on the first of January this year, making it the latest in a stream of states in the USA to recognise the need for this most important area of health and safety.
This 8-page document is well worth a read. It includes a statement which forbids an institution from taking retaliation against a worker who refuses to perform an manual handling task out of concern for their own or their patients safety, even when their is a lack of equipment.
Vermont, the latest US state to promote Safe Patient Handling as a priority. Incidentally, California still refuses to even discuss the issue.
