When putting together an argument for more equipment it helps to be able to present some figures to your purse holder. However, often gathering those statistics can be time consuming. By the time you have compiled your argument, 5 more people have gone sick.
That’s why in the UK we have the HSE who do the donkey work. In the USA there are various agencies but possibly the best is the Bureau (Americans like that word) of labor Statistics.
One statistic for instance
Bureau of Labor Statistics
according to the writer of the featured article is that nursing homes reported over 24,000 musculoskeletal injuries, which required days off were reported in 2007. This figure though is not a true representation. In the UK any injury requiring more than 3 days off work must be reported, no matter what the industry. In the US the cut off is 17 days. But even this is not a fair representation because this is only for healthcare, in the manufacturing sectors the cut off is 8 days.
It makes for an interesting read though. One of the key people in the USA making her mark is an English person named Lynda Enos who is mentioned in the article, maybe some of you know her?
