By the time you read this, the story will have passed. I checked the web site but it, quite understandably, hadn’t been updated as I sent this out.
Dr. John Cashman, an orthopaedic surgeon has given up his job as a consultant and took his family to live in Malawi. One of only 7 surgeons in the whole of Malawi he is embarking on the gruelling 600 mile, off-road, high altitude Cape Epic mountain bike race.
The reason? To raise cash for an operating and physiotherapy department. His wife Robyn said, “Our recent decision to remain in Malawi and forego the opportunity to return to his NHS consultancy that he so much enjoyed, reflects the gravity of need here in this region of Africa. The hospital is in desperate need of a new operating theatre and a physiotherapy facility to treat the children they operate on.”
The link below shows the sort of deformities that John has to deal with as well as a good look at the bike ride he is doing to in order to achieve his objectives. I have an affinity with Africa, the cape in particular, so if you can, please sponsor him (it’s never too late).
