Sounds almost impossible doesn’t it. How do you perform surgery without making incisions?

As I’m sure you all know, one of the reasons surgeries can take a long time to recover from is often not the surgery itself, but the fact that the skin and muscles have been cut. This is where most of the pain experienced by the the patient comes from. This is also why, in the cases of abdominal surgeries, that the moving and handling of that person can be a difficult task.

4 days ago, bariatric surgeons in the USA performed a  stapling of the stomach. Rather than making an incision in the abdomen, they passed all the required tools and a camera through the patient’s mouth and completed the surgery from the inside. The 51 year old went home the same day and is already back to work.

I have mentioned this to a few people to gauge their responses. Some have said “good idea”, others have grimaced at the thought of it. However, this is not the end of the story. Another method that surgeons have discovered is to perform the same surgery through the vagina. The fact that there are no external wounds mean that infection rates are very low. Other surgeries have included 34 transvaginal gallbladder removals and several transvaginal gastrectomies.
