The training tab takes you to the links from where you can access learning programmes which either I, or recommended third parties offer. As you probably know, although I do carry out traditional moving and handling training via freelance to other organisations, I have been at the forefront of promoting and developing e-learning as a compliment of classroom based training.

From the training tab you can see the various e-learning options I offer. They are primarily, e-learning for care/nursing staff and e-learning for instructors.

Frequently asked questions are:-

How can e-learning replace classroom training when the skill is a practical one? It cannot, and it isn’t meant to. It is a compliment thereof. The theoretical aspect of safe patient handling is just as important as the practical aspect. E-learning helps bring the theory to the fore. It also has the benefits as outlined in the bullet points above.

important as the practical aspect. E-learning helps give the theory the thought that it deserves. The students cannot be a passive attendant but must interact with the programme to meet the learning outcomes.

Does this mean that there is no way of practical assessment of my skills? No. The e-learning course for instructors has optional paperwork included for peer assessment of practical skills. If you have no peers qualified to assess you, then, if you feel it is needed, I can arrange for peer assessment to take place. However, there would be an additional charge for this. Most people are in a position to be able to organise a mutual back scratch.

What about the e-learning for nursing and care staff, how does this work? This is similar to the course for instructors with a few differences. The level of support is limited to e-mail rather than phone. There are only 4 elements to the course, these being anatomy & physiology, legislation, risk assessment and the theory behind the practical. The cost is a very reasonable £8 per person. However, this cost can be substantially reduced by block bookings as follows:-

These passwords don’t have to be issued all at the same time. The training manager/personnel development officer will receive a weekly report outlining who has registered and if they have submitted their compulsory tests at the end of each section. This will also inform them of the number of “seats” left available. As each student completes the course, they receive an e-mail with their certificate in .pdf format which they can then print for their own records.

Can rival training companies take advantage of this offer? Yes, we are not rivals in my eyes, we are simply sharing a customer base. Whether you are a training company, NHS trust, University, Private hospital, Nursing home group or a private individual you can register as many “seats” as you wish.

Can I re-brand it to make it look like my own? You can re-brand it to look like your own. The cost of a re-brand is a one off fee of £250. However, for 200+  passwords this fee would be waived.

Can I purchase it outright so that I don’t have to pay for each “seat” on the course? Yes, This can be negotiated and the cost would depend upon the size of your organisation and on the conditions of the license agreement; i.e. whether you are going to be re-selling it or using it as an in-house tool.

How can I use this tool to promote my business or save my institute money? Typically you might do half a session on theory with the other half devoted to practical. If this is the case, you will likely be restricted to 6-8 individuals during that time. On the other hand, if most of your students had completed the e-learning theory prior to attending the class, you could have delivered the same content to 12-16 people in the same time. The following equation may be true

Cost of a training day:

Cost of training when everyone has completed the online training:

This also means that the staff are only kept away from the unit/ward for a half day instead of a full day. Businesses can pass some or all of this saving onto their customers which will in turn, attract more custom. Where there are students who cannot (or will not) access a computer, the majority of individuals can complete the course online and a classroom based course can be organised for those who require it.

Institutions can either show a saving to their managers or find a means to catching up as a result of difficulties caused by cutbacks.

What do students think of this means of training? See the list to the left of feedback from the nursing students of Teesside University.

As an instructor, when would an online course be an appropriate means of updating myself? Instructors (which most of you are) you can do an online refresher for £85.  There are several reasons why you might want to consider e-learning, here are a few:-

The list could go on. The 9 part course is backed up by as much telephone and e-mail support as you need.

What do Teesside University Nursing Students think of the programme? Read their comments below.

I found the course very productive and would like to see more of these. I will use the information gained every day in my career as a nurse therefor found it very beneficial. I did not encounter any problems and would rate the course 10 out of 10.

The course was informative and provided the basic elements. It was useful as I now know which areas I need to read around.

I found the course informative, especially the biology behind how movements and loads impact on the body, it made it easier for me to grasp.

I would rate this very highly, I have used other online tests regarding moving and handling and found this to be the best I’ve used.

Doing the course online meant I could complete the course in my own spare time, instead of feeling rushed to do it all at once.

I found the pre-course information helpful. As well as this, I felt reassured knowing if I had any problem I could email Gavin Wright for help.

The course was very well structured and informative, as well as very interactive, meaning learning was fun and easier to remember.

A very informative course, of good general knowledge. It will come in very useful throughout my course and through into practice.

The course is very good & very essential maybe an additional 1 or 2 questions that are not multiple choice may be helpful. I will do my best to follow the required forms of updated manual, moving & handling skills at work and on placements. 10/10 Very helpful, I cannot complain, i found it all helpful

Very good. The information was clear and concise and the diagrams and photos were good visual aids, it made it easier to understand.

I thought the course was extremely educational. The anatomy & physiology, legislation & risk assessment parts were really interesting to myself as I hadn't much knowledge of these. As I've worked in a Health Care setting previous I found Practical to 'top-up' the knowledge I already possess. My only criticism being that there was a lot of reading to do, & as I am a visual learning I wrote notes all the way through. It would have been helpful to be able to copy & paste some parts but I understand the reason for not allowing this facility. (I have then this on board and am in the process of making it possible - Gavin) I found the pre-course information to be a little hard to understand but I blame this on it being the first couple of weeks of university life & everything being a blur really! The assistance received was excellent as I had trouble accessing & needed to e-mail Gavin (at the weekend), Gavin was very helpful & e-mail back the same weekend.

I thought the course was well structured, very easy to understand and the information on each of the sections was very interesting and helpful. I will use the information given buy applying most of it to my nursing skills workshops in university and out in placements in the near future. Assistance received was very helpful. I did encounter a problem myself accessing the site, once i reported this problem i received a reply to my email straight away which then helped me to log on to the site and get on with the sessions. (there was a problem accessing the site for a number of students due to an administration error but as confirmed above, this was sorted within minutes for the majority of students - Gavin)

I thought that the course was useful and provided relevant information for all aspects of the course. It was interesting to work through and you gain a certificate at the end to be placed in student portfolios. I didn’t have any issues or problems regarding the course but thought the information/messages that were sent generally were useful.

it was hard to access the course, and hard to move around the website. (you cannot please everyone, but I am looking at alternative ways to navigate the system - Gavin)

I thought the course was very helpful and interesting, and I don't think any improvements should be made. I will use it during my placements to make sure I am a professional nurse. I would rate the pre-course info as very high as everyone has been very helpful and informative.

I thought the course was very thorough and easy to use, all the information given was relevant to the questions asked and there were also some useful tips. The pre course information was good and when some problems were experienced due to a broken link the website manager was very useful and kept us up to date with when the link would be working again.

I like the whole way everything was set out. It was easy to follow but sometimes when the writing was flashing on then going off to go onto the next part. e.g. on the sliding board i missed the writing because it wasn’t on long enough and i was unsure how to get it back up. (Each page is indexed and can be reloaded with the click of one button, see comment below - Gavin) I thought the website was great and easy once you got on it. it was a simply way of understanding and reading the information.

I liked the interactive element of the course. I also liked the way you could watch and re-watch the slides. I will be able to use the information I have gained in my placements, I also feel I will be better equipped when doing the practical moving and handling section of my course at University.

i thought the course was really effective 10/10.

It is informative has given me knowledge in e-learning. It is clear and straight forward , enjoyed working on it in the comfort of my own home and would recommend it to other students

The course was very informative and taught me a lot about the physiology of the back. I will use all of the information so i provide best possible care when out in practice, not only to keep my patients safe but also myself. There was a few teething problems to start with due to the wrong web address and a few people had problems logging on. I however managed to log on first time with no problems so i found the system fine. There was just enough relevant information and the ability to do the course from my home was brilliant as i was able to go through it thoroughly when i knew i had time and didn’t have to rush.
