Have you ever wondered what time of day patients usually fall at? Is there an expected time? If there was, then maybe you could devise measures to reduce risks around this time of day.

Well according to a peice of research by Lester and friends published last month, the answer is between 4pm and 8pm. That is if you happen to be in a New York Nursing Home at this time. They looked retrospectively at 220 fallers over a six month period. 66% of the incidents occurred in the resident's room and 48% ended in an injury. Falls during the evening were likely to result in a more serious injury than daytime falls. A statistically significant higher percentage of falls (27%) occurred between 4 pm and 8 pm (compared with expected number in a 4-hour period. Among the 3 nursing shifts, the lowest percentage of falls occurred during the 11 pm to 7 am night shift (16%).
